Taking Stock of Neighborhoods is both a research project and a community-capacity building initiative. It includes maintaining an interactive data/mapping website that tracks and provides access to neighborhood-level statistics on social, economic and environmental conditions and trends in Wayne County, Michigan.
Research
CUS and the Urban Safety Program maintain databases of community indicators including U.S. Census data on population characteristics, voting statistics, crime data, housing conditions, and community organizations. We can view how one neighborhood compares to another, or to the community as a whole, or even to the national average. The mapping-database system was developed by Dr. David Martin of WSU's Center for Urban Studies. The system uses Google Earth, PHP, and Macromedia's Coldfusion software link maps with databases that contain statistics for neighborhoods in Wayne County.
